What are Shared Components?

Shared components are common features that are delivered to both slow channel and latest channel sites each month. All sites automatically receive updates to the Webex components delivered by the cloud, such as Webex site pages, meeting integrations, APIs, the mobile app, the web app, and site administration.

As a slow channel customer, you’ve chosen to keep the desktop meeting application on a specific supported slow channel version. You will not see changes to your in-meeting experience, like those added to latest channel sites, unless your site upgrades to a newer desktop app version.

The following are the new shared component updates delivered to slow channel sites:

Flow updated for a user joining a meeting and signing in or signing up for a Webex account using Google credentials

Due to a change mandated by Google, starting with the January 43.1 update, the flow for users when joining a Webex meeting and trying to sign up or sign into their Webex account using Google credentials has changed. However, starting with the 43.1 update the users are directed to their default system browser to complete the sign up or sign in process before being navigated back to the app to continue joining the meeting. The user is informed in the app that a new browser tab is opened where they need to complete their sign up or sign in process before proceeding with the join. Users who are selecting Google as their social provider when signing up or signing in are impacted. This change is backported to 42.6 (June) and 42.10 (October) updates.

Highlighted features for this update

  • Scheduled meetings template using RESTful APIs

You can then directly apply this template when scheduling a meeting in the future. We’re adding this feature to our Meetings RESTful APIs to allow you to programmatically save scheduled meeting preferences as a template.

This feature isn’t available for Webex for Government.

  • Update from Site Administration to Control Hub

In case you missed the update in 41.11.4, administrators can now confidently update their Meetings site management to Webex Control Hub. Previously, meetings data such as upcoming meetings, recordings, site settings, and user preferences are maintained from your Webex site.

The benefits of managing all Webex services in Control Hub include:

    • Unified way of licensing across all Webex services (Messaging, Calling, and Meetings)

    • Consistent security policies across all Webex services

    • Common sign in for users for all Webex services

    • Modern administration controls like Directory Connector, System for cross-domain Identity Management (SCIM), Active Directory (AD) groups, and more licensing templates by AD Groups

Review the site conversion doc before updating administration to Control Hub. It’s important to review and follow Prepare your Control Hub Organization before you attempt to update your site.

This update (from Site Administration to Control Hub) is enabled on most sites shortly after this version update. This feature won't require an update of client versions.

    Limitations:

    • Sites that are managed by partners using CPAC won’t receive this update.

    • Sites whose users haven’t been linked to Control Hub aren’t eligible for this update.

This feature isn’t yet available for Webex for Government and will be available in a future update.

Pre-Meeting experience

For more information, see the Highlighted Features for this update.

Refine the user interface for interpreters in Webex Meetings and Webex Events (New)

Interpreters receive their own email that includes an interpreter password. When the host adds an interpreter to the invitation list, there’s a new icon to indicate that they are an interpreter. This distinguishes an interpreter from the panelist and other attendees.

Device enhancements

Speaking while muted prompt for third-party video devices

Similar to other Cisco devices, we’re now introducing Speaking while muted prompt for third-party video devices. We’ve all experienced when we mute our line in a meeting, and after a while we start talking, forgetting that the audio was muted. However, people in the meeting can’t hear us.

Say goodbye to these problems, as Webex detects that you’re trying to speak while muted and shows a warning message to remind you to unmute your line.

This capability is for third party standard-based video devices where users mute themselves by using DTMF-*6 command.

When the user has been quiet for more than 60 seconds and has started talking again, the message to unmute themselves is shown on their screen.

Webex Meetings for iOS and Android

Administrator ability to disable Webex Events (Classic)

Administrators now have the ability to disable Webex Events (classic) from their Webex site. This is useful for administrators who’d want their users to use Webex Events (new).

Announcements

The 41.11 update has important announcements, which you can review in the Announcements for the Slow Channel of Cisco Webex Meetings.

Highlighted Features for this Update

  • Configuration of Webex Control Hub and Webex Site Administration to support eCDN

This feature leverages a Vbrick Rev tenant for enterprise content distribution (eCDN) and video content management (eVCM).

After the administrator turns on and configures Vbrick Rev eCDN site users on the Webex site, they have the ability to get webcast events configured on Vbrick Rev tenant site that supports eCDN.

You’ll need to acquire the Vbrick service to use this feature.

This feature is available on a delayed release cycle. Check status.webex.com/maintenance to see when it is available on your site.

  • Web scheduler now supports Multiple time zones

  • Similar to Webex Events (classic), the host can use the Time zone planner in the Webex Meetings and Webex Events Scheduler page to plan a time where the invitees who are based in multiple time zones can attend.

  • Easy to use audio mute state management, recording controls, lock state, and raise hands available on Webex on-premises devices

It’s now possible to accurately reflect the mute status in the meeting participant list for our on-premises registered video devices. Previously, when they muted or unmuted themselves, this wouldnt show up in the participant list.

When the host mutes the video device user, the user on the video device also sees a device notification indicating that they have been muted. When the host requests the video device user to unmute, the video device user is prompted to unmute using DMTF-*6. However, they can simply use their device mute button to unmute themselves.

In addition, if the host turns on or off the ability for participants to unmute themselves, users on video devices then see appropriate messages rendered on their video device.

When a meeting is setup in the moderated unmute mode, hosts on the Webex App can continue to mute and unmute video device users directly from the app.

There’s no request to ummute and response flow. Keep in mind that in this mode, if a user on a video device uses their local mic button to control their mute state, this is not reflected on the Webex App participant list.

As a host on a Webex on-premises registered video device, you can now record meetings using controls on the device interface instead of using DTMF controls, see direct device messages indicating the lock status of a meeting, and can now raise and lower your hand in a meeting using controls on the device interface instead of using DTMF controls.

With the first tap on the recording control a new recording is started. Tapping on the recording button again stops the current recording.

In addition, all users on Webex on-premises registered video devices see a recording icon shown on the edge of the screen. When the recording stops, the icon is removed.

When a meeting is locked, there’s a key icon shown on the edge of the screen to indicate that the meeting is locked. When the meeting is unlocked, the key icon is removed.

When someone else raises their hand, you see a hand icon displayed on the edge of the screen. When all hands have been lowered by the host, the icon is removed from the screen.

Make sure to follow the instructions at the Active Controls help article to configure your on-premises components for proper operation of this feature: Improve the Cloud and Premises Meeting Experience with ActiveControl.

  • Support for Android 12

Webex Meetings is now supported on Android 12.

Scheduling Webex Events (New) now becomes easier

As a host, you can see the Schedule an event button on the site home page rather than it being hidden under the Schedule a meeting button.

When you want to switch to Webex Events (classic), you can provide feedback on why you still use Webex Events (classic) rather than Webex Events (new).

Hosts can invite attendees or upload CSV Files in Webex Events (New)

Hosts can invite attendees using the event information page once they schedule an event. If there are a lot of attendees, then the host can upload .csv files that contain up to 10,000 attendees. If the host wants to add more than 10,000 attendees, they can upload multiple .csv files.

User interface change in Webex Events

User interface changes in Webex Events (new) are aligned with the behavior in Webex Events (classic). By default, the Start button changes to Schedule in the Schedule an Event section.

Device Enhancements

Easy to use audio mute state management, recording controls, lock state, and raise hands on available for Webex on-premises devices

It’s now possible to accurately reflect the mute status in the meeting participant list for our on-premises registered video devices. Previously, when they muted or unmuted themselves, this wouldn’t show up in the participant list.

As a host on a Webex on-premises registered video device, you can now record meetings using controls on the device interface instead of using DTMF controls, see direct device messages indicating the lock status of a meeting, and can now raise and lower your hand in a meeting using controls on the device interface instead of using DTMF controls.

This is expected to significantly enhance the computer audio quality of Webex meeting participants from India and nearby regions in Asia Pacific.

Folder and version compatibility changes

With the 41.11 update, the install folders have changed for Windows users. Installation files are now found in the following folders:

Latest version sites - MSI deployment:

  • Program Files (x86)\Webex\ or Program Files\Webex\

Latest version sites - individual user downloads:

  • Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Webex\WebEx\Meetings

  • Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Webex\WebEx\Meetings_01

  • Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Webex\WebEx\Meetings_02

  • Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Webex\WebEx\Meetings_03

  • Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Webex\WebEx\Meetings_04

Slow channel version sites – MSI deployment:

  • Program Files (x86)\Webex\ or Program Files\Webex\

Slow channel version sites – individual user downloads and signed-in users:

  • Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Webex\WebEx\Meetings\

  • Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Webex\WebEx\Meetings_slow\

We’ve also made it faster to join meetings when updating your Webex version. You’ll now join your meeting first and then update later when updating from the last four versions, instead of just the last two. Your Webex Meetings application always updates to the latest version, even if an older version is saved locally. If the local version isn’t the same as site version, they may be upgraded or downgraded to the site version.

Signed-in slow channel version site users also join first and then updated later to the version in \Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Webex\WebEx\Meetings_slow. If the local version isn’t same as site version, users may be upgraded or downgraded to match the site version.

This update also allows MSI deployment to slow channel sites. If user deploys the Webex Meetings MSI package msiexec /i webexmc_x64.msi FORCELOCKDOWN=1, then it uses the Program Files (x86)\Webex\ folder version to join meetings if the folder is compatible with site version.

Finally, we’ve added webexhost.exe as a daemon process to replace ciscowebexstart.exe, which automatically downloads client package to provide a faster joining experience.
